The Path

Seven phases, end to end.

The Path to Positioning isn’t a questionnaire. It’s a guided walk through seven phases with the Brand Fox — your assistant through the process. You arrive with what you think your brand is. You leave with what your brand can actually hold.

  1. 01Setup

Choose your path — physical product, digital product, or service. Tell the Brand Fox where you are in your journey: pre-launch, early traction, or repositioning. The questions ahead will adapt to your situation.

  2. 02Disarming

Describe your offer in your own words. What it is. Who it's for. What you've been telling people. This is your starting point — not yet pressure-tested, just honest about what you currently believe.

  3. 03Assessment

Work through structured questions across twelve positioning dimensions. Some questions ask for facts. Some ask for instincts. Some ask you to point at images. The combination is where the honesty comes from.

  4. 04Reflection

See your brand's full positioning fingerprint. Where you scored consistent. Where you scored in tension. The Brand Fox highlights any contradictions surfaced by your answers — usually two to four — and explains what's pulling against what.

  5. 05Reckoning

Watch your brand placed on the shelf — among the real reference brands your category lives next to. See which ones you cluster with, which ones you don't, and which neighborhood you actually occupy.

  6. 06Refinement

Sit down with the Brand Fox and work through the contradictions one by one. Accept the proposed edits, push back, or steer the conversation in your own direction. Every change updates your positioning in real time.

  7. 07Manifest

A complete brand identity document, drafted from your refined answers. Identity statement, position summary, audience, voice, design direction, and the contradictions you resolved along the way. Yours to use, refine, or take to your team.

Why not just ask ChatGPT

Because the tool that wants to please you can’t tell you when you’re wrong.

The trap isn’t the AI — it’s the lack of structure around it. An LLM works forward from how you brief it. If you describe your brand a certain way, it builds toward that. Even when the model could push back, helpful behavior by default looks like agreement. So you walk away with a confident-sounding brief that won’t survive contact with the market.

The path to positioning uses a completely different method. Behind our simplistic Path faces sits a sophisticated brand model across seven phases. The dimensions, the reference library, and the contradiction patterns were built by a team of marketing and brand professionals with years of positioning work behind them. Your answers are read against that structure, not interpreted by a model trying to keep you happy. When the data points in different directions, the Brand Fox Workflow is at your disposal to tackle any contradictions with honesty and the professionalism your brand or future business demands.

The framework is the moat.
The AI is the assistant.
